From Heritage to Harvest: Our Shared Farm Story

At Lantz Farms, farming isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life passed down through five generations of dirt-under-the-nails, heart-in-the-land family farmers.

Our story begins in the 1880s, when Annius and Karolina Lantz immigrated from Jämtland County, Sweden, settling on the Canadian prairies near Wetaskiwin, Alberta. In 1905, their son Nils and his wife Annie homesteaded land east of Calgary, laying the foundation for Lantz Farms. Since then, the land has remained in the family, with each generation adding its chapter to the story. From Henning and Betty Lantz and their two sons, Roy & Dave, to Dave and Eve Lantz and their three children, Kacey, Nilsa & Janna—this farm is built on legacy, hard work, and a deep respect for the land.

In 2011, we expanded operations to the East Kootenays of British Columbia, purchasing a unique 500-acre piece of land along the Kootenay River between Wasa and Skookumchuck. This location is now home to our market garden, premium hay production, commercial Angus cattle, and a lively flock of chickens. It’s also where you’ll find our much-loved roadside Veggie Shack and our seasonal pumpkin patch, open from late summer through fall. The BC farm is run by Mike & Kacey Day(Lantz) and their three children—who proudly represent the sixth generation and are already learning the ropes, helping in the gardens, feeding chickens, and riding along for calving checks. The future of Lantz Farms is in good hands.

Meanwhile, our Alberta grain farm thrives just east of Calgary, where we grow wheat, barley, canola, and peas. Dave Lantz operates the Alberta side with a strong collective of like-minded farmers, including Mark Grant, Steve, Ben, and Andrew McElroy. And when needed, “Team B” Evan & Janna(Lantz) Kolbuc jump in with backup support—and a few laughs. It truly takes a village (or at least a very well-fed crew) to keep things running smoothly through seeding and harvest.

Despite being in two provinces, we operate as one tight-knit family farm, sharing knowledge, equipment, laughs, and a deep love for the land. We believe in sustainable farming, supporting our local communities, and growing good food for good people—whether our infamous corn or a ton of wheat.

Thanks for being part of our story. Whether you’re visiting The Veggie Shack, picking pumpkins with your family, or serving dinner made with something we grew—we’re so glad you’re here.
